Goodwin's ideas about music videos

Andrew Goodwin is a university professor who made a book about music videos which is called Dancing in the Distraction Factory: Music Television and Popular Culture which was made in 1992. His idea was key things to make a music videos.
The relationship between the lyric/ music and the visuals, with the visuals.

when a  music videos  lyrics directly corresponds to the visuals it is illustrating.
The example I used was Owl City's  Fireflies. when the artist says fireflies the word comes on the pink toy you can you this at 0:29.

Amplifying-
Kanye West Homecoming
The word amplifying means to enhance the style and the mood of the song. The example I used was Kanye West song  Homecoming. In the video it clearly shows that he is coming home and he walking in the city he knows and it shows his mood at 1:36 that he is very energetic.

Contradicting just means it goes against the song or lyrics. The video is going against the lyric of the song. The Jessie J song Price Tag ft. B.o.B lyric goes against the song because when you watch the music video Jessie J says its not about the money, Then you can see her standing underneath a tree with money hanging off the branches, you can see this at 1:00.

Iconography
Iconography means that  you can see little hints that tell you it's that type of genre. For example you might see expensive jewellery and watches and urban looking clothes or girls wear very little that means it is a Hip Hop music video. the example I chose was Trey Songz Foreign. I chose this video because in the video at 0:47 you can the ladies are cooking and making breakfast in their knickers and bra.

star persona

star persona just means what the artist is about and what they are like when we watch their videos.
the example i chose was lil wayne 6 foot 7 foot. I chose this video because it shows you that he  is a bad boy and he loves expensive things and he likes smoke weed you can see him smoke weed at 1:48. You can also see him sitting on a high chair like a king wear a crown at 2:14

voyeurism

Voyeurism music videos are music videos where it shows females as a piece of meat as an object. The example that I chose was Benny Benussi video satisfaction. I picked this video because it show ladies working at a building site while wearing a bikini and you can this at 0:24. The women in this video is drilling and she is showing inappropriate  parts of her body. The video is a very clear example to back up Andrew Goodwin voyeursim theory.

intertextual Micheal Jackson |Smooth Crimeal
The Michael Jackson video is a reference to The Band Wagon movie. I used this example because in the Micheal Jackson video at 0:18 you can that Micheal Jackson he is wearing the same suite as the guy from The Band Wagon.

Music Video Techniques

number of cuts

good - cold play charily brown
This video is a very  good example of a music video that has a large number of cuts. Coldplay's  music video is a very fast and up beat music video. the song is lively you can see  this at 1:28 the cut to the song and the visuals all match each other at the correct  pace, which creates the audience to feel that they are in the in the video. the cuts in this video makes it more enjoyable to watch.

bad - eminem stan

This video is a very  bad example of a music video that has a large number of cuts. eminem's  music video is not a very fast or a up beat music video. the song is not very lively you can see  this at 2:02 the cut to the song and the visuals do not all match each other at the correct  pace, which creates the audience to not feel that they are in the in the video. the cuts in this video makes it less enjoyable to watch.

special effects

good - b.o.b nothin on you

this video has good special effects because it makes very realistic. Special effects is used in video a lot for example at 0:05 they use animations with paper collages and it very effective and it makes it a very good music video with special effects and it very creative because it makes the video very enjoyable to watch. when they show B.O.B and Bruno Mars there is animations paper stencils behind them.

bad Justin Timberlake rock your body a music video that has bad special effects is rock your body by Justin Timberlake.
Justin Timberlake's music video has only one special effect this makes it look like he hardly had  no money to spend on this  music video. The graphics look like the Justin Timberlake is just in one room like a cube with flashbulbs flashing different colours it looks really cheap and very tacky and unprofessional. the graphic in this video vas very poor, for example at 1:56 the special effect was very boring.

cut to the beat

good-  Ne-yo miss independent
this is a good example of a music video that cuts to the beat because the beat in the song does cuts ti the beat of the mood a lot. for example at 0:52 he is happy and when you see his facial expression it cuts to the beat very well.

bad- get her back
A really bad example for cutting to the beat is ''get her back'' by Robin Thicke the  music video shows him trying to get back with his wife and it dose cut to the beat but not good for example at 0:26 it cuts to the beat but it so bad and half of the time in the video it hardly cuts to the beat.

varied camera language

good T- pain Buy U A Drank
this T-pain video is a good example of a music video that use good camera language for example you can see  at 1:25 you see that the camera language is really good because when the camera is on T- pain it shows how his body language is and you can see a mid shot of T-pains body and it is really good.

bad-Michael   Jackson this is the way you make me feel
Michael Jackson The Way You Make Me Feel is  a really bad of  varied camera language because  at 01:41 it shows a long shot of Michael Jackson just standing there and the camera language is too basic and it's really not  that interesting to watch and it is poor. This technique is used in this music video because he's trying to explain to this girl how she makes him feel.

lip syncing

gooBeyonce Crazy in love
this a good example because at 00:27 it shows her dancing a lot and she is lip synching the words because she is  dancing a lot. Lip-synching is used in this video because she's doing a lot of dancing. you can see at 0:30 and the lip syncing is very good in this video.

bad Selena  Gomez come and get it
this is a bad example of lip syncing because she is in time with beat and she dose not look like she is actuarially singing the song for example at 0:58 her movement of her lips is too much and it dose match the song or the order of the words.

green screen

good-
Beyonce ft. Lady gaga - Telphone
this is a good example of green screen because it is very realistic and it very believable.  The use of green screen in this music video is used when Beyonce and lady gaga are in a car, the green screen to  make the video have a more realistic effect that the car is driving down a road you can see this at 5:00.

bad- twist and shout

This is an example of a very bad green screen video, the use of green screen is not  creative and looks so  unrealistic as it cut half of his body off half  of the times. you can use this at 0:36 that half of his body is not there and that is very bad it also looks he did not spend a lot of money for this video as the green screen looks tacky and poor.

style and conventions for music videos

genre video

There are many different music genres such as Hip Pop,  RNB and many more. Each of these genres will use different  elements/conventions in their music videos including clothes, setting, cast ethnicity, etc which will make them recognisable as music videos for that particular genre of music.  I am going to talk about Hip Pop/ Rap genre  music videos My example is notorious B.i.g video  Juicy,  In this  video you will see the cast wearing flashy jewellery and driving expensive cars the women are  wearing very little  you can see this at 3:33. The setting shows a typical hip hop life style and is set in the hood and in nice big crib you can see this at 2:44. the narrative is about his rags to riches life story which is typical of this genre of music videos. at the beginning  he is in the hood.

Genre subverting video's go  against the codes and conventions of any genre music video,  for example a hip pop song has young people but if they going against it they will have old people.
An example of  a genre subverting video is Eminem's We made you. it goes against the hip pop genre as it looks like a country music video at 0.13 when a woman is dancing in front of an American car with chickens and haystacks she is wearing denim shorts and a cowboy hat. at 1.40 we see someone dressed up in a polar bear costume this looks strange and not at all something you would expect to see on a hip hop video.  If I was to go against the I would use bits from this video such as the restaurant screen and to have country dressing in hip pop video.

surreal/ abstract
Surreal and abstract music videos are weird and have elements of surprise. Many music artist has surreal and abstract  music videos. An artist who makes this type of video is Basement Jaxx 's song  Where's Your Head At. I dchoose this one because they put faces on the monkeys and it is really weird and memorable as well. you can see the artist face on the monkey at 1:21.

performance

A performance music video is not live but it is recorded as if it is live, performance means that the artist performing in front of the camera and proper in the camera face.  Jessie J's Bang Bang song is an example of performance because in the video at 0:59 she looks at the camera when she is singing and dancing. The dressing in the video is very flashy.

narrative
Narrative means a clear story line to a song and the story line develops in the song. The artist that I know that has Narrative in there song is Bruno Mars's song Gorilla. In the video at 0:25 there is a bit of narrative the girl talking in the dressing room about Bruno mars and that another girl is looking at him. The narrative in this video is very good because it relates to the song.

animation
In today's society many artists have music videos with animations. for example Method man's song the pit has animation all the way though the video this style works for this video as it is very violent and they can get away with this by using animation.
this is shown at 1:59 when  the zombies are blown
to bits. The institution has chosen this style of music video because of the violent content.
In this video they have animated the artist to look like the real artists this is seen at (1.48) you can see the Method Man  character.  The institution has used this because the audience will love lots of violence and the music because it rap the most of people love rap music.

impressionist
impressionist means the visual matches the mood of the song, so if it is a sad music it will have to sad visual. I Got A Feeling by Black eye peace matches the mood of the song because it show that they are having a good time and they very happy and energetic, it does  have a bit of performance but i think it is  an impressionist music video. In the video at 4:17  the cast is seen at party dancing round the pool  and jumping into the pool.

interpretive
Interpretive means the visual matches the lyrics. for example R kelly trapped in the closet. it is about him trapped in the closet and wakes up in the bed and sees a women and she kisses him, everything dose matches with the lyrics. in the video at 0:34 he says he wakes up because of the sun an as he is saying that you can see the sun rising and shining though the window.

Referring

Referring is when a music video gets joined  with  movies  This usually happens because artist makes a soundtrack for the movies. During the music video Scenes  of the movies are included in it.
for example Tonight Alive - The Edge  from amazing spider man2. at the beginning of the song it shows where the movies is set then then songs starts, every time Jenna Mcdougall sings a verse a scene from the movie is shown. you can see spider man  flying the air at 0:17 and that is clip form the movie.

homage

some artist use their music videos to show respect to another text that they like it can be noticed by the audience or encourage them to engage with the original text as well. for example Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson the video pays homage to the costumes and scenery used in scene of  the film The Band Wagon. you can see this at 0:36 as michale jackson is wearing the same suit that the man from the band wagon wore.

parody
parody means it makes fun out of another media text. for example the Rihanna song whats my name there was parody video and two people trying to be like drake and Rihanna and changing the words of the song. for example at 0:02 instead of saying oh nana what's my name they oh nana what,s that smell.
